SUV stands for ‘sports utility vehicle’. The exact definition of the term SUV is a bit hazy but it’s generally applied to any car that has more ground clearance than a hatchback, saloon or estate. Or, to put it another way, you sit higher up in an SUV, which gives you a commanding view of the road ahead. SUVs can also be great ‘working’ vehicles. They’re usually very practical, many of them can tow very heavy trailers and some are so capable driving off-road that they can practically climb mountains.

SUVs appeal on many levels. Many – even some of the smaller models– offer all the space and practicality that most families could ever need. The higher seating position can be useful, too – if you’re lifting small children into and out of the car, the extra height reduces your need to stoop. (It’s also easier to get in and out if you have mobility issues.) And an SUV can be one of the best options if you need to tow a really heavy trailer, like a horsebox.  

There’s a wide variety of SUVs available. The smallest (such as the Suzuki Jimny) are about the same size as a city car, while the biggest (such as the Range Rover) are among the largest cars you can buy. Some give you great fuel efficiency and low running costs while others are high-spec luxury cars.
